This book is both old and very new. It is old because it is an outgrowth of over thirty-five years of teaching college physics. The first, second, and third editions of this book have been used in some three hundred colleges and universities throughout the country (It was also translated into Italian, and is used in Italian Universities). It is now, however, very new because it is the first College Physics textbook that is totally interactive.

Would you like to know how the universe works?
The science that has found many of the answers to that profound and age-old question is particle physics: the study of those impossibly tiny particles with unbelievably strange names: bosons and leptons, quarks and neutrinos.

This book presents a number of selected papers given at the LB9 conference, held in Potsdam, Germany, in August 2000. It is dedicated to new techniques and methodologies for studying interfacial layers. One group of manuscripts deals with the application of surface plasmons at solid interfaces, used for example in resonance spectroscopy and light scattering. New applications of various types of Atomic Force Microscopy are reported making use of various modifications of tips. A number of chapters are dedicated to light emitting diodes built with the help of LB layers. The aim of these studies is the improvement of efficiency. Electrochemical methods were described as tools for developing sensors, in particular miniaturised pH or gas sensors.

English | 6 edition (October 22, 2002) | ISBN: 0471438812 | Pages: 681 | PDF | 14 MB
Building on the success of five previous editions, this new sixth edition continues to present a unified approach to the study of the behavior of structural members and the development of design and failure criteria. The text treats each type of structural member in sufficient detail so that the resulting solutions are directly applicable to real-world problems. New examples for various types of member and a large number of new problems are included. To facilitate the transition from elementary mechanics of materials to advanced topics, a review of the elements of mechanics of materials is presented along with appropriate examples and problems.

Polyynes: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications compiles information found scattered throughout the literature in inorganic, organic, and polymer chemistry into one cohesive volume. In addition to being a precursor of fullerenes, polyynes are one of the key precursors in the formation of soot and carbon dust, or elemental carbon in the galaxy, and their properties can be linked to interstellar band phenomena and other astrophysical behavior.

Contact Mechanics (repost)

English | 1985 | 456 Pages | ISBN: 0521255767 | PDF | 11 MB
This treatise is concerned with the stresses and deformation of solid bodies in contact with each other, along curved surfaces which touch initially at a point or along a line. Examples are a railway wheel and rail, or a pair of gear wheel teeth. Professor Johnson first reviews the development of the theory of contact stresses since the problem was originally addressed by H. Hertz in 1882. Next he discusses the influence of friction and the topographical roughness of surfaces, and this is incorporated into the theory of contact mechanics. An important feature is the treatment of bodies which deform plastically or viscoelastically. In addition to stationary contact, an appreciable section of the book is concerned with bodies which are in sliding or rolling contact, or which collide.

What happens when something is sucked into a black hole? Does it disappear? Three decades ago, a young physicist named Stephen Hawking claimed it did-and in doing so put at risk everything we know about physics and the fundamental laws of the universe. Most scientists didn't recognize the import of Hawking's claims, but Leonard Susskind and Gerard t'Hooft realized the threat, and responded with a counterattack that changed the course of physics.
